Learn how Profit and Loss (PnL) is calculated in 1inch Portfolio so you can track your trading performance.

PnL is a key metric for evaluating your trading performance. It shows how much you’ve gained or lost over time, helping you monitor your portfolio’s financial health.

A positive PnL reflects an overall profit, while a negative PnL indicates a loss. You can use this information to evaluate your strategies and make informed decisions.

How does 1inch calculate PnL?

1inch uses a straightforward formula:

PnL = Current Value − Inflow Value + Outflow Value

Let’s break this down:

  • Current Value: The current worth of your asset in USD.
  • Inflow Value: The total amount you invested.
  • Outflow Value: The total amount you withdrew.

To further understand the profitability of your investments, 1inch also calculates your Return on Investment (ROI) by dividing your PnL by your Inflow Value.ROI = PnL / Inflow Value

Here’s a real-world example

Meet Bob, a blockchain trader. Over a few months, Bob made the following trades:

  • January 1: Bob bought 100 tokens at $1 each.
  • March 10: Bob bought another 50 tokens at $2 each.
  • May 12: Bob sold 60 tokens at $2.5 each.

Suppose the token’s current price is $1.5. Here’s how Bob’s PnL is calculated:

  1. Calculate the Current Value: (100+50−60)×1.5=$135

Explanation:  Bob bought 100 tokens initially, added 50 more, and sold 60, leaving him with 90 tokens remaining. These tokens are valued at $1.5 each, resulting in a total current value of $135.

  1. Calculate the Inflow Value: (100×1)+(50×2)=$200

Bob spent $100 on the first batch of tokens and $100 on the second batch, totaling $200.

  1. Calculate the Outflow Value: 60×2.5=$150

Bob sold 60 tokens for $2.5 each, earning $150.

  1. Calculate the PnL: 135−200+150=$85 (Current Value−Inflow Value+Outflow Value)

Bob’s remaining tokens are worth $135, his investment cost $200, and he earned $150 from selling tokens, leaving him with an $85 profit.

  1. Calculate the ROI: 85/200=42.5% (PnL / Inflow Value)

Bob gained $0.425 for every dollar he invested, resulting in a 42.5% return.

So, we can explain Bob’s performance simply

In plain terms:

  • Bob invested $200.
  • He withdrew $150 after selling some tokens.
  • His remaining tokens are worth $135.
  • This brings Bob’s total to $285 – this includes both his remaining assets ($135) and the funds he withdrew ($150).
  • His gain (PnL) is $85, resulting in a 42.5% ROI.
